About This Project

1981 FAIRFAX STATION KITCHEN RENOVATION

After receiving my certification in Interior Design in 2013 and starting my business in 2015, I was ready to tackle a home renovation project. We purchased this house in 2016, and it was not updated since it was built in 1981. My husband was still on active duty in the Air Force, and my business was part-time so I could finish homeschooling our three kids. We would have loved to have tackled the entire house, from renovation to furnishings, from the beginning, but we were going to live here for quite some time, so we have taken things slowly to update and remodel spaces throughout the home.

Our first big project before moving in was to remodel and renovate our kitchen and dining room. My husband and I took on quite a few DIY projects with this renovation, which gave us an amazing opportunity to learn the construction side of a project. Thankfully, my husband and I work very well together. We have different strengths with renovation work that complement one another very well. We hired a contractor to handle the remodel of the kitchen but took on projects like refinishing the floors, installing baseboards and casing, painting, and installing the backsplash. Needless to say, we have an immense appreciation for what contractors and trades do and the challenges they face.

For this remodel, we moved the kitchen from the front to the back of the house, which was where the previous dining room used to be. We then opened the wall between the new kitchen and the new dining room, which used to be a living room. We have made a few decor changes since these photos were taken, so this page with be updated with new photos very soon.
